View Full Version : P407 Forum News
Hi All
Is there any plans to upgrade the "P407 Forum News" plug in
to work with SD3.4.0 ??? please
This was a great little plug in when I was using version 2.6 and would be fantastic to use again on 3.4.0 :D
Thanks

Hey Alan,
I've taken over development of this plugin. It has already been completed and will be available to purchase in July. More details will be posted on subdreamer.com/.org announcing it's release and where to buy it.

Thank you for the Reply....
This was a free plug-in now that it is chargeable will there will be any extra features like scrolling etc or just the same as when it was on version 2.6 ?
Thank you

The initial release is a completely redone from the ground up. It has the same initial features but will be updated with new features. All upgrades are free indefinitely with the purchase.

My release is currently planned in mid-july. It is already completed but we are taking piracy into serious consideration, encrypting the PHP of the plugin and requiring a license key to use it on a customers's website. This plugin will only be released after we finish our licensing system.

Just so everyone is clear.
The old forum news plugin used to be a SD maintained plugin for SD2.
SD3 when first released did not have forum integration period. Starting with SD3 in October 2010, I've mentioned that forum integration would return to SD3 but without forum news, forum skinning, or article to forum posting.
The 'forum news plugin' can be a lot of work when it comes to varying languages, forum shortcodes and formatting, special characters/languages support etc., that is why we no longer offer it because the Latest Posts plugin or RSS display is usually sufficient for displaying excerpts of forum activity. The forum news plugin is essentially reinventing the wheel,, displaying formatted forum content (phpbb, vb, sd, ipb, smf) externally (within SD) which wasn't a priority feature for SD.
That said, I'm assuming Justin has tackled this one because he knew SD wasn't going to be releasing this plugin but that some SD users would still love that extra functionality/external syncing of forum content within their SD pages with more formatting and options.. etc., and that appears to be what he is bringing to you.

Well said Brent. Yes, I have all the current shortcode translations for all of the forums supported by Subdreamer. As far as reinventing the wheel goes, it's kind of a yes and no situation. Although you can import RSS feeds, it's not an easy enough tasks for all skill levels of users. Plus, having a skin editor in the plugin to customize every facet of how the news is laid out and the ability of setting specific forum ids on each page allows for much more freedom without needing any real knowledge.

I'm just saying the end result of displaying forum content within SD pages is akin to reinventing the wheel while Latest posts and RSS is adequate for most purposes.... for those that know how to use it. I just can't justify spending time on it and wanted to explain why so customers know why it is no longer a SD interest and why it is a valuable plugin for you and others.
If someone wants more functionality or control over forum content/displaying it within SD pages that is where your plugin will be perfect. :)

When it is released for purchase will you be able to get the plug in here on
SD.com/org or your site ??
Will the new forum news plug in have the scroll feature like:-Forum News Scroll (http://demo.phpbb-seo.net/demo/rss-links.php)
Thanks Again

A feature like that can be added into version 1.1.0, but I wouldn't have enough time to finish an addition like that for the initial release.
Hi JustinM
Thank you for the reply.
Will that be considered for a future update ?
I feel that the forum new adds extra content to your front page
which can only be good for SEO, plus the scrolling feature gives it extra movement also
Thanks again

I definitely agree with this addition and I will make it the first additional feature to include in 1.1.0. I just want to make sure that it is not only slick but fully customizable by any skill level (transition speed, scroll direction, etc.)

Because XenForo integration was released with Subdreamer, we're adding support for it at the moment. We also are trying to finish the design and shopping cart for our site so purchases can be made for the script.

How are things coming along with the release of the Forum News Plugin? I would really need to buy it as soon as possible, or at least get a new update about when it will be released.

Currently, my primary focus is getting the new version of Player Affinity online before I can get back to selling this plugin. I just finished adding the XenForo support in, but I have 70+ writers and over 1,000 users anxiously waiting for Player Affinity to be updated (which is also a critical need because it fixes a lot of problems that are preventing them from effectively doing their work), so it's gonna be a little bit.
And for those that have PM'd me asking to buy it now, that will not be possible. There's too much software piracy online to risk that and until I get my focus fully back on the store and launch it, it will need to remain on the shelf for now.
The main problem is that at the end of July, I had a lot of work assigned to me from my day job, and being the only PHP developer for that, Player Affinity and this store, I'm spread a little too thin at the moment.

Probably when someone picks up development for SD 3.x to be quite honest.
I would look into it but at the moment I don not have any time to do so.
Hello Tobias
I clicked on the link you posted and I got this message:-

Reason is because it is in the beta testers section my friend.
But rest assured there is development being made conserning this plugin.
Im not sure if I may copy Tobias's message here without the attachment ... so I will leave that up to him.

Just a note for those not familiar with the forum news plugin, we were originally never going to release the forum news plugin.. especially not in the beginning as we brought forum integration back 11 months ago, we had enough on our plates... but Tobias revived an old version of this plugin and we'll support it as we can. It will not support xenForo at this time. JustinM also has a well developed forum news plugin that was under development, we might see that at some point as well which will give you guys another forum syndication tool to play with. :)
Hi Brent
Thank you for the informative reply !!

Is the version that Tobias revamped available for download and will it work with v3.4.1 ?
and
JustinM also has a well developed forum news plugin
I take it that Justin's version is still in development ?? maybe JustinM would be kind enough to give a possible release date or update.
Thank you

The SD Forum News plugin is currently in beta phase and will then be available for all customers as a separate installable plugin.
Hi
Thanks for the heads up Tobias:)
