View Full Version : Wanted: Tagging mod for articles...

I would like to have a field in the 'add a new article' screen for 'tags or keywords' for each article.
From an end user perspective, each article would display the 3 or 4 tag/keywords which would be hyperlinks. Clicking on a link would return search results for additional articles with that same tag/keyword.
Can anyone do this?

I would like to see something like this as well.

Personally I think it's essential for any true 'content management' system, since it helps admins MANAGE content, and helps end users NAVIGATE content.
When I turned 'tags' on in my blog, the page views went up dramatically.
(A tag cloud would be great, too - but I can live without it ;) )

I requested this on Subdreamer.com because I want this worse than badly, I think they are considering it for the next release (but that was before Saturday's new release, so I dont know).

The article system has the tags already. Outputting them as links shouldnt be to hard.
The search spider does not work off the url. If DGN has a way we can input this into spider. Im assuimg we can auto generate links if the keywords are stored seperately.

Me, too!
If anyone is willing to take a stab at this, let me know.
So would a standalone tag cloud plugin which used the article keywords to generate the cloud suffice?

Do you mean 'instead of' the tags in the footer? If that's what you mean - my answer is 'no, that wouldn't suffice'.
If you mean a stand alone tag cloud IN ADDITION to clickable tags in the footer, my answer is 'yes' :)

I think I understand what pcoskat wants. If you go to break.com and view one of their movies on the right column u will notice keywords that are clickable that do searches.

I think this should be setup similar to the comment system. This would allow tags to be created for any valid plugin. This way a cross-content search would be very easy to perform. Wow... powerful stuff.
Well anything which requires changes to the Subdreamer core will not be something which you get soon because we just did a major update and our next focus is improving existing plugins (that's not to say that I don't think your ideas are not good or valid - heavyeddie's in particular sounds very appealing). A standalone plugin which is only available on sd.org can be done quickly.

"Yesterday" is even better :)
BTW, here's another example of an article in ONE category, but with FOUR tags:

I wasn't quite understanding this, but that example helped and now I am all over that idea...how cool!!! I hope it would be simple to implement and use.

William, to see an example of a 'tag cloud', click here:

Scroll to the bottom of the page and look in the RIGHT hand corner for a box with the header: Top Topics
Those are all the tags from recent articles.

well the price quotes I've seen is 300-400 for this mod on a public release - I'll pony up the first 25
Hey Guys,
It's not as easy as I first thought :) Building the tag cloud or links is pretty easy but making those links pull up the correct articles as a list is harder - it almost ends up being a 'Latest Articles' plugin. Also, the tag cloud or links would probably need to be in a different position on the page than the results - e.g. the cloud would be in the menu column on the left and the results would appear in the center of the page - this requires two plugin positions and therefore two plugins!
I'm not sure where to go with this. I may release two plugins which achieve this as a starting point and then build some of this functionality into the 'Latest Articles' or 'Search Engine' plugin at a later date. Either way it will be free to licensed Subdreamer users
Will keep you posted.

If you used the plugin in conjuction with the search engine could you pass the variables to the search engine? This would eliminate creating the other plugin.
Yes that's what i had in mind

Why not take it a step futher and us DgN's search sphider as it can also go through integrated forums as well....you know it will just be a matter of time after the tagging cloud comes out that it will be reqested as a mod.

Some of what you guys just mentioned sounds like Greek to me...
I hate to be selfish, but at the end of the day, I don't really need a tag cloud, or integration with the 'sphider' (since I don't even know what that is.)
I just need some clickable tags :D
(and I need them BAAAAAADLY! ;) )

IMO, this would only effectively work as a core addon. It would probably be a little sloppy to include as a plugin that is seperate from the article. I look at some websites out there, and I have no idea how they do it (like answers.com - it looks like every article has its own dedicated template)...
